Sälen!

[SO MANY PICS I'VE ADDED A FLICKR ALBUM! Click here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24512412@N03/sets/72157604088220494]

So last Saturday we left for our ski trip in the mountains... in the town of Sälen to be exact. Here are some maps to show where it is in relation to Örebro (I couldn't find any with both towns on them, haha):

The first day we just unloaded stuff and moved into the cabin we rented for the week. Sunday we went grocery shopping, and Lasse asked me what I wanted to make for dinner that night... I told him it was my day off. No cooking for me on my weekends! Lasse's sister Sara arrived that day also, with her husband Andreas and their daughters Nikita and Jaqueline. We basically just hung out, played cards (I taught them rummy) and got into the hot tub (that had to be heated by a fire next to it... but not like a cauldron! haha). I also enlightened the boys on the difference between the words 'cap', 'lid', and 'cover'... as in, you
don't put a cap on the hot tub, you'd say cover because of its size. Caps are for bottles, lids are for medium-sized objects, and covers are for big things. Oh, and we drank a bit around dinner-time... I first had a screwdriver made of polish vodka and orange saft (like weak orange juice, cos you add water to it)... it didn't taste at all like a screwdriver! And also hot chocolate with brandy... which tasted like a warm mudslide. Uni-pie would've loved it :) The funny thing is that I got a headache while drinking... so maybe I'll start getting the hangovers then instead of the morning!

Monday we went to the slopes, to Tandådalen(?) and Hundfjället-- I'm not exactly sure what the first translates to-- tooth something-- but the second is dog mountain. We went to Trollskogen (the troll forest), where they have scenes from the daily life of trolls (and 3 lucky people will receive post cards of this place as well!) We also stopped into the Waffle Cabin for a snack... of waffles. :) The rest of the day was more card-playing and more hot-tubbin'.

Tuesday we went shopping a bit in the morning. I bought a couple cartoon moose coasters. Why, you ask? Cos they're awesome, that's why! Then we ate hot dogs in these little side cabins on the slopes, and then me and Susanne took the little ones back to the cabin, where me and Charlie went sledding and attempted to make snow angels and had lots of fun in the snow! This pic is of the back view of the cabin (notice the hot tub). That night I made my famous mashed potatoes again, everyone got into an argument about American politics (which is interesting with foreigners, cos it was about the Democratic caucuses... and they had no idea what they were really about, haha), and then was asked about what my future plans for my life are and what i hope to do in the next ten years and all that.... and I have no idea! I've always disliked being asked that, cos things always change and I just want to enjoy whatever comes my way. Simple as that. And then we played Guitar Hero III... 5 stars on the Killers and the AFI song, yo! This past summer paid off :)

Wednes-day was just lots of cleaning, grocery shopping, Guitar Hero, and making waffles for this group of snowmobilers that ride through every year. They then joined us for the grand 3-course meal of crawfish, veal, and chocolate pudding! I tried a crawfish... all I could think of was the episode of the Simpsons where Homer had that pet lobster (what was his name? it's driving me crazy!!) and then ate it at the end while crying... don't worry, I didn't cry! But I don't like their little beady eyes looking at me while I eat them! The veal was good and there were boiled potatoes to go along with them. The chocolate pudding was delicious, as is expected of chocolate pudding. I played some card game with Louise, Andreas and Sara that I could not for the life of me figure out! It was like a mix of poker, Uno, and highcard... yeah, I'm still confused...

As for Thursday, I'm not sure what we did... just went to the slopes for a while, had hot chocolate, hung out at the cabin and played more Guitar Hero, I guess. And we had mexican food that night, which made me very homesick... especially when I had a tortilla with butter-- that sent me over the edge! (again, no crying for me, haha). I think the fact that it had been nearly a week without any contact from friends or family was a factor as well. :)

Friday's highlight was going to the Lodge... downstairs was the
'poolarium'
but me and Susanne stayed upstairs near the fireplace. I spent most of the time studying Swedish from this rad Swedish Grammar book the Brazilian girl in my class let me borrow.. (haha, only I would consider a grammar book rad)... and what redundant sentences those were! :) That afternoon Sara, Andreas and the girls left back to Kumla (and I will now spend 5 hours on Mondays working for them in lieu of the Holms, and make a bit more money!)

That night we watched more of Melodifestivalen 2008... where Sweden picks which song they ultimately want to send to the Eurovision Song Contest. I watch it for the host, Kristian Luuk-- he's like a cross between Conan O'Brien and Joel McHale... except that he speaks Swedish. But it seems like he has a similar sense of humor :) (that's a pic of him, haha...see the similarities?) Cos really, the music is quite crap... but it's fun to watch.

So yeah! That was my trip to Sälen! I'm sure there are more details than that, but I can't remember all of them off the top of my head, and way way more pictures, but you'll have to view my Flickr album to see those. And if you have any specific questions, just ask. The comments are enabled so that anyone can reply, without having to sign up, so ask away! Or comment away! Next update: more of Örebro and Kumla... filled with pictures! 'Til then, x.

Yay! I was dying to hear how things have been going!
The music tips that you sent me were great, I'm super impressed :)
Post some pics of Elias when you get the chance. I'm excited to see what he looks like (probably squishy and baby-like)

Oh, and the lobster's name was Pinchy or Mr. Pinchy. Such an amazing episode
