(me and nick, the guitarist, back in 2003. i love this picture, i was obviously psyched to meet a member of my new (as of that night) favorite band!)
i shoulda written this earlier, i can't remember the details as much... basically, it was at debaser, the same place as the amy macdonald show. i didn't make any new friends this time. the opening act might've been good, but i couldn't hear the vocals, cos of the sound mix, and i didn't catch their name... all i know is that they had a whiny guy lead-singer, and twin girls singing backup.
then franz came out, they were bursting with energy!! nick and his crazy legs were back, along with alex's weirdo dance moves... i think bob might've moved a little bit in the beginning too! these moves rarely show up on tv appearances, so i was worried they'd quit using them :) they sang loads of new songs, nearly every other song was off the new album. i realized i'd forgotten the words to their old stuff, so the combination of the two made it feel like the first time i saw them, back in 2003... nearly 5 years exactly, give or take a week! i'd never even heard of them until that show, and neither had most of the uk.... it was 3 months before "take me out" was released, and they were opening for hot hot heat. that show was also broadcast all over the nation on Radio 1 that night, as part of a big live music festival they were doing in brighton, so... yeah! enough reminiscing! this time, they played a 45 minute set, but then did a 25 minute encore! odd :) and i don't know what else to say, their live performances are so hard to describe- i think they are the most energetic band i've ever seen (minus bob), they completely let loose! they have very nerdy dance moves that make the crowd go nuts and get everyone to dance right along with them...
as for how excited i was, it's funny... i'd been waiting 5 years to see them again, having regretted not seeing them again a few days before leaving brighton, when they opened for grandaddy; became a massive fan in the meantime, while also reaching an almost-bored point with the wait (hence forgetting the lyrics); wondered randomly on occasion what would've happened if me and heather ended up hanging out on their bus that night instead of playing video games with hot hot heat instead (probably nothing- i was way too intimidated by alex to even approach him!) but, after seeing them again, i didn't feel like i thought i would! it was a good night and all, but i instead felt much older and reflective of the past 5 years, and also slightly disappointed that they didn't play any of my favorite songs (and i have a lot, i don't know how they managed to choose ALL the ones i tend to skip!) but i guess it's ultimately a good thing.... i'm reminded of how far i've come as a person, while also finding a new appreciation for those forgotten songs. :) x.
